Clear Exterior Silicone for Mounting Sign Letters, Squeeze Tube
Clear 100% silicone in a squeeze tube to seal the stud holes and the power lead hole behind your sign, outdoors or indoors. No caulk gun needed.
What is every hole you drill for a sign?
Every hole you drill for a sign is a way for water to get into the wall. This clear silicone seals them: the stud holes and the hole the power lead passes through. Rain runs down the wall and past the sign instead of into the brick, stucco or framing behind it.
It is 100% silicone sealant. It stays flexible and waterproof after it cures, so the seal holds as the wall heats up and cools down. It is clear, so a little extra at the edge of a hole does not show. It works outdoors and indoors.

It comes in a squeeze tube with a nozzle, so you do not need a caulk gun. Choose 1 tube or 2 tubes. One tube is enough for a typical sign of up to about 12 letters.
How to use it:
- Drill the holes, then brush and blow out the dust. Silicone grips clean, dry masonry, not loose dust.
- Cut the nozzle tip small, so the bead is thin and easy to control.
- Fill each stud hole from the bottom up, then push the stud in. Wipe off what squeezes out with a dry cloth before it skins over.
- Once the power lead is through the wall, seal around it where it goes in.
- Leave the letters alone while the silicone cures.
Timing and weather: it is dry to the touch in about 30 minutes and reaches full strength in about 24 hours. Apply it when it is above 40 °F and the wall is dry. Pick a dry day, and do not start right after rain or while the wall is wet with dew.
Where not to put it:
- Do not run a bead all the way around an outdoor letter. Outdoor letters have small drain holes at the bottom; leave them open.
- On halo-lit letters, keep silicone off the back edge, where the glow comes out.
Wear gloves: wet silicone is hard to get off your hands.
How to choose
Count the pieces you are hanging, including logo shapes and anything else that mounts on its own. For a typical sign of up to about 12 letters, 1 tube is enough. For more letters, or for large letters that hang on the thicker studs, choose 2 tubes. A second tube also covers a touch-up later or a second sign.
If you are ordering the letter mounting hardware kit, note that it already includes exterior silicone.
Plan the day as well: the wall must be dry and the air above 40 °F, and the silicone needs about 24 hours to reach full strength. Have a dry cloth at hand for wiping, and gloves to keep it off your skin.

Questions
Do I need a caulk gun?
No. It comes in a squeeze tube with a nozzle, so you press it by hand. Cut the nozzle tip small for a thin bead.
Why clean the holes before the silicone?
Drilling leaves fine dust packed in each hole. Silicone sticks to that dust instead of the wall and the seal fails. Brush the hole, blow it out, and fill it while it is dry.
How long before it is set?
It is dry to the touch in about 30 minutes and reaches full strength in about 24 hours. Apply it above 40 °F on a dry wall, and leave the letters alone while it cures.
Should I seal all the way around the letters?
No. Seal the stud holes and the power lead hole only. Outdoor letters have drain holes at the bottom that must stay open, and halo-lit letters glow out of the back edge.
